Prior to his enlistment, he was employed for ten years as a labourer with a Machine manufacturing business in Galt, Ontario. Michael Ryan initially served with the Perth Regiment and trained in Canada between between September 28, 1939, and October 5, 1941. He then served in the United Kingdom from October 6, 1941 until February 19, 1944. On March 31, 1944 he was transferred to the 1st Regiment (4 Company), Canadian Special Service Battalion and served in Italy until his death on May 28, 1944. He was killed in action during the Anzio breakout battle ending the stalemate and beginning the advance on Rome.
