The Loss of HMCS Margaree
On October 20, 1940, HMCS Margaree departed Londonderry
for Canada with a five-ship convoy, OL.8.
Shortly after midnight, October 22nd, about 300 miles (483
km) west of Ireland, with poor visibility, a moonless sky, and
rough seas, the Margaree cut across the course of the SS Port
Fairy, a British flagged refrigerated ship.
Port Fairy’s reinforced bow struck Margaree just forward of
the bridge, slicing the destroyer in two. The
Margaree’s forward section, which capsized and sank almost
instantly, taking with it all officers and most of the crew who
were asleep in the forward mess decks. Only the after portion
of the ship remained afloat long enough for Port Fairy to rescue survivors. 143 of the crew were lost, 28 were rescued.
