His brothers, Andrew Alan Gavel (1880-1959), William Peters Gavel (d. 1966), and Sidney John Gavel (1894- 1916), also served during WWI. The four boys were the grandsons of Andrew Stillman Gavel, born in Gavelton, Yarmouth Co., NS. While serving in England Ralph married Dorothy Mildred Perryman of Lamberhurst, Kent, UK, on February 10, 1919. Ralph returned to Australia on November 12, 1919, and was discharged on January 4, 1920 at Sydney, Australia. Ralph also enlisted during WWII and served with the Citizen Military Forces of the Australian Army. His service No. was N69505 and his wife, Dorothy was listed as Next of Kin.
