William Leslie Pitman was the son of Amos Hilton Pitman (1870-1959) and Evelina (Atwood) Pitman (1871-
1953) Brooklyn, Yarmouth Co., Nova Scotia. He was the husband of Ethel Mae (Hipson) Pitman (1897-1930)
born in Pubnico, Yarmouth Co., NS. They were married in Barrington, Shelburne Co., NS on July 1, 1918. At
the time of their wedding, William was serving as a Mate with the Royal Naval Canadian Volunteer Reserve
  in Halifax, NS.
William became ill while in service with the Navy, suffering from influenza, and never quite recovered. He
  held a First Mate’s Papers.
In 1919, William was appointed Keeper of the Barrington Lightship. The
Barrington lightship was a schooner-rigged vessel with red masts and a red
hull with the word, “Barrington” in white letters on both sides. It was
anchored in the middle of Barrington East Bay in 1876 for the purpose of
guiding vessels into the Bay and through Barrington Passage. By 1900 the
vessel was equipped with two fixed lights; a white light displayed from a
height of 35 feet above the deck of the lightship, and a red light at 15 feet.
The Barrington lightship stayed in service until 1925.
William’s health deteriorated in December 1919, and he died of
pulmonary tuberculosis on July 24, 1920, his death attributed to his
  wartime service.
At the time of his death, he was living in Oak Park, Shelburne Co., NS.
His body was returned to Brooklyn, Yarmouth Co., NS, for burial on
July 26, 1920, in the Brooklyn Cemetery, Yarmouth Co., Nova Scotia.
