Second Lieutenant 823 Lancashire Fusiliers, 3rd Battalion March 27, 1894 Unknown Unknown Unknown Banking clerk James Mather De Wolf Almon, father July 31, 1917 23 Belgian Battery Corner Cemetery, Ypres, Belgium I. H. 20. Harold was the son of Son of James Mather De Wolf and Effie Annie (Tozer) Almon of Willowvale, Transkei, Cape Province, South Africa. His father was born in Bridgetown, NS; his mother, in Staines, Middlesex, England (now Stained-upon-Thames, Sussex). Harold is listed on the Memorial, St. Mary's, Collegiate Church, Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, South Africa (ref. South African Roll of Honour 1914-1918). Harold also served with the South African Irish Regiment prior to the Lancashire Fusiliers. He was killed in action at Ypres. "Almon was returning from a reconnaissance fraught with real danger and after considerable delay, which caused his platoon much anxiety, for he was a popular officer, he had almost reached the trench unscathed when a shell burst near him with fatal results. Prior to enlisting, Harold had been a clerk in the National Bank in Port Elizabeth. Decidedly clever, contrary to many other young clerks he was studious and keen in pursuit of knowledge to such an extent that he was known to spend his two weeks annual leave in the splendid Main Library in Main St." (from the South African War Graves Project).
