Students Pay Tribute to All WWII Casualties with Ties to Nova Scotia.
Island View High School, Eastern Passage, Nova Scotia
Remembrance 2025
Marking 80 years since the end of the Second World War in November 2025, students at Island View
High School, Eastern Passage, Nova Scotia, paid tribute to all casualties with ties to Nova Scotia in a
moving school‑based remembrance project.
For the first time, the Wartime Heritage Association’s comprehensive list of Second World War casualties with ties
to Nova Scotia was formally presented, displayed on poppy petals prepared by local students.
As one student reflected: “Today we honour them with a flag not made of fabric, but of memory. Here those
petals gather, not scattered across distant fields, but joined together on the flag they fought beneath. Each of
these names once appeared on a telegraph that arrived at a door carrying the message that somebody’s loved
one would not be coming home.”
The aim of their initiative was to pay tribute to all Nova Scotians that died in WWII. The Wartime Heritage
Association was contacted and the list of 3807 names that has been researched and curated over the past twelve
or more years was provided to the students.
After cutting almost 4000 poppy petals, students carefully wrote one name on each petal and continued to do so
until every last name was written. Then, they attached the petals to the red background of a Canadian flag which
was proudly presented at their school’s Remembrance assembly.
Using a combination of music, drama, and visual arts, students created a deeply moving tribute. Teacher Melanie
Kennedy Conrad, Department Head of Drama, Dance, and Visual Arts coordinated the initiative.
This meaningful initiative, assisted by the research of the Association ensured that every name with ties to our
province lost in the Second World War was remembered, and every sacrifice honoured.
We are grateful to the students and educators who embraced this project with such dedication. Together, we
ensure that history is not only preserved but lived and remembered by new generations.
