On April 18th, 2005, George Egan was recognised with a Nova Scotia Award for Teaching Excellence. The award was presented at a ceremony that took place at Pier 21 National Historic Site in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Although George Egan could not attend, Glen Gaudet was there to receive the award on Egan’s behalf.
"History: Look in your own backyard" was the theme of Education Week 2005 which was celebrated from April 17 to April 23. The highlight was the Education Week Awards, where educators from across the province who have imbued their students with the values of our Heritage, were honoured.
Dignitaries in attendance were Her Excellency, Lieutenant-Governor Mira Freeman, His Right Honourable, Premier John Hamm, and Honourable Jamie Muir (Minister of Education).
"History is more than what we learn in textbooks -- it's all around us in family stories, homes, communities and our province," said Education Minister Jamie Muir. "There are many teachers like George Egan all across our province, who are helping students appreciate history and encouraging them to actively investigate the history that surrounds them."
