In a 2008 survey, Canadian Veterans expressed that remembrance work that brings young people and Veterans together is the most effective way to teach younger generations about wartime heritage and that it is an important volunteer activity. In the case of Wartime Heritage, all the Association's work is on a volunteer-basis.
2009 will mark the 65th Anniversary of D-Day and the beginning of the Liberation of Europe and the Pacific in 1944. It also commemorates the 100th Anniversary of Naval Aviation (Fly Navy 100). The Association’s ability to take part in these commemorations and others, along with initiating our Association’s own remembrance activities, is of course dependant on financial support.
These commemorations will find our youngest WWII Veterans turning 82 years of age. The years to come will find fewer of them among us, and fewer able to travel and share their stories. The Association invites people to make 2009 a year of reflection and remembrance; a Year to Remember.
If you know a Veteran in your family or in your community, the Association encourages you to take the time to site down and hear his or her stories if they are comfortable sharing them. Through the Association's Wartime Heritage Projects, hundreds of students have taken part in assignments where they research WWII on a personal level by interviewing a family member or neighbour who served in the Second World War.
On average, our Second World War Vets are 85 years of age. The responsibility of remembering our wartime heritage is not just for today’s Veterans or Veterans of past conflicts. Younger generations should do what they can, particularly while these men and women are still among us, to show our appreciation while learning from them at the same time.
The public should embrace the opportunity to learn from Veterans, to share information and perspectives on the Second World War with the larger purpose of preserving the lessons and legacy of that decisive moment in history.
We hope that now that we offer the option to donate online, you will consider making a donation to assist us in making 2009, a Year to Remember.
