Honouring our Veterans |
April 25, 2009
Since 1992, the Association has been dedicated to the preservation of wartime heritage. Through its remembrance initiatives, the group remembers and honours those who served during WWII and other conflicts.
The Association pays tribute to Veterans and to the wartime generation. It educates audiences both in Canada and abroad. It provides in a profound and personal way an opportunity for youth to interact with Veterans, to gain knowledge of wartime history, and to gain a sense of personal achievement through involvement.
The focus from 2003-2008 was 440 Productions – touring stage productions of wartime songs and stories in Canada and England. In 2008, the Association toured with its newest theatre production, Echoes of the Forties – Songs and Stories of a Wartime Generation, with 6 performance across Nova Scotia in Royal Canadian Legions and community theatres. Past tours involved performances in Canada and the UK (in Portsmouth and in Deal near Dover) in partnership with the Telegraphist Air Gunners Association, the Royal Navy and the Royal British Legion.
The average age of our WWII Veterans is now 85 and we feel it is important to honour these men and women while they are still among us. One in three Canadian men over the age of 85 is a Veteran. This speaks volumes about how their generation answered the call in WWII.
Our Association’s remembrance initiatives include:
- The presentation of Wartime Heritage Exhibits and displays
- Wartime research and publication of stories from Veterans (Veterans Share initiative) - Students research of their family and/or wartime history through Wartime Heritage Projects
- The publication of a newsletter, Remembering Our Wartime Heritage
- Producing wartime musical CDs
- Maintaining this website’s Story Archive, News items and the history of the Association
These project honours our Veterans while involving youth and Veterans in a meaningful remembrance initiative. We measure the success of our programs by the reaction of the audiences, particularly of Veterans, and also by the learning experiences gained by the youth participants.
2009 will mark the 65th Anniversary of D-Day and the beginning of Liberation of Europe and the Pacific in 1944. It is also the 100th Anniversary of Naval Aviation. The Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy will celebrate the later under the name of Fly Navy 100.
Sharing the heritage of the wartime generation with others and undertaking initiatives is dependant upon the financial contributions the Association receives. Any amount however large or small you consider appropriate will assist us in meeting our objectives. Your real support makes our remembrance work possible.
We trust you believe, as we do, in the importance of our goals. Please feel free to explore the website or contact us if you require any other information.
